As I've mentioned already, I'm "retiring" from DJ'ing... It's more of an extended hiatus where I just plan to do other things with my life while not thinking about trying to stay up on all the latest music coming out.

I'll probably make a return, and will probably do small or private joints for friends and family that ask, but this is it as far as "major events" go for the time being.

Dee Phunk, who will be hosting the event, wouldn't let me hang up my needles without one last party, and he explicitly requested a Neptunes/Timbaland night. He's been one of the biggest champions of the mixtape I did with that theme, and it seemed like a fun idea... So here we are.

You may have heard through the grapevine that I'm "retiring" from DJ'ing, and it's true. I'm giving it up for awhile to focus on other things. But there are a few mixes I have lying around that either need to be finished, or just need to be uploaded. This mix right here is one of them.

May 16, 2012 marks Janet Jackson's 46th birthday. I've been a huge fan ever since I was a little kid and this is just a mix of some of my personal favorites songs of hers. Unfortunately I couldn't cram every gem I wanted to in here (i.e. "Diamonds"), but there's plenty for you to dig on.

It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years already since Aaliyah tragically died in a plane crash in the Bahamas after wrapping up filming of her "Rock The Boat" video. I was a very big fan of Aaliyah, and I always wonder what she would've gone on to accomplish had she not been taken from us so early.

Soundcheck With The Roots

Back in 2009 when I was DJ'ing The Roots' weekly jam sessions at New York City's Highline Ballroom, one of my favorite things to do was show up hella early. If I was lucky, I'd get to witness some jam sessions during sound check. A few times, I dusted off my old middle school percussion skills and grabbed a tambourine*.

Peep this vid of James Poyser (drums), Captain Kirk Douglas (guitar), Owen Biddle (bass), and guest musician Adam Holzman (keys).

*As the weekly jam sessions went on, I became the band's de facto tambourine player whenever they did their funked up version of "How I Got Over."

What many of you probably don't know about me is that I got my start DJ'ing house and jungle in the late '90s. I wouldn't start spinning hip-hop regularly around 2003 (shout out to the Loosie crew). In those early days of DJ'ing, I dropped major coinage on import 12"s of groups I'd never heard of based on quick needle drops. One of the groups I came across at that time was 4hero.

Fast forward to 2011 and one-half of the group, Dego, has asked me to do the promo mixtape for A Wha' Him Deh Pon?, the very first album he's releasing under his own name.

The mixtape ~~isn't quite ready yet, but should be hitting your eardrums by the end of the week~~ is available to download here. It features unreleased beats, and tracks from Dego projects like 4hero, Silhouette Brown, 2000 Black, DKD, and more!

This Just Happened…

The external hard drive I got to replace the external drive that failed in December 2010 (which replaced another drive that failed in 2008) has given up the ghost as of this morning, April 30th 2011.

There is no back-up.

It is my MP3 drive. It is the drive I use when I DJ.

I really don't want to get into the magnitude of what was lost,

I have no spare cash to replace it and purchase two of these, one of these and the drives to put in it.
